World’s Largest Clean Energy Corridor Ramps Up Efforts to Secure Power Supply for Summer Peak

In July, China experienced widespread and sustained high-temperature weather. According to statistics released by the National Energy Administration, the national power load set new record highs three times in the month, reaching a peak of 1,553 GW, a year-on-year increase of approximately 45 GW over last years extreme value.

Faced with the continuously rising power demand, the worlds largest clean energy corridor has given full play to its role as the ballast stone and pillar for energy supply while ensuring flood control safety. From July 1 to August 4, the corridor maintained an average of over 100 generating units in operation, with a peak output of over 62 GW and a maximum daily peak-shaving capacity of 28.8 GW. The peak-shaving capacity is equivalent to that of 24 pumped storage power stations, each with a capacity of 1.2 GW. The corridor has continuously delivered green power to power distribution areas including Central China, East China, South China and Southwest China, effectively easing the power supply strain caused by the persistent high-temperature weather.

As the operator and manager of the worlds largest clean energy corridor, China Yangtze Power Co., Ltd. (CYPC) has firmly shouldered the responsibility of power supply guarantee. With the guidance and support of the Changjiang Water Resources Commission (CWRC) under the Ministry of Water Resources, State Grid Corporation of China and China Southern Power Grid, and in line with the unified deployment of China Three Gorges Corporation (CTG), CYPC made every effort to ensure that the strategic national asset can fully function and deliver power stably during the critical summer peak season.

In terms of hydrological and meteorological monitoring assurance, the hydrometrical telemetry team fully launched the special inspection campaigns before the flood season. The team inspected more than 110 telemetry stations and 10 maintenance centers to check battery voltage, verify water level data and debug communication terminals, which effectively guaranteed smooth data transmission and stable, reliable operation of equipment.

Regarding forecasting and dispatching, the forecasting and dispatching team continuously strengthened hydrological and meteorological prediction for critical periods and meteorological forecasting for power distribution areas. The team conducted 9 rounds of intensified joint consultations with relevant parties, strictly implemented dispatching instructions, and continuously optimized power generation plans in light of power supply demands, enabling the worlds largest clean energy corridor to give full play to its role in meeting peak power demand under optimal operating conditions.

Regarding refined unit O&M, CYPC coordinated its cascade power stations to step up equipment inspections, enhance temperature monitoring of critical components, strictly enforce the 24-hour duty system, and formulate emergency plans to cope with extreme weather. In response to frequent peak-shaving tasks, station O&M personnel adopted refined operations and strict management. By conducting high-quality screen monitoring, patrol inspections, equipment operations, and maintenance, they closely monitored unit operating conditions, ensuring rapid response capabilities and a reliable standby status for all generating units.

Going forward, CYPC will continue to conduct refined operation and management of the clean energy corridor, closely monitor changes in hydrological and meteorological conditions, and further optimize the operation modes of cascade hydropower stations. By fully releasing comprehensive operational benefits, the Company will contribute to flood safety of the Yangtze River and national energy supply security.
