Recently, driven by heavy rainfall in the Minjiang-Tuojiang and Jialing River basins as well as the Three Gorges intermediate basin, inflow into the Three Gorges Reservoir rose rapidly. On August 4, it experienced its first flood with inflow exceeding 30,000 m³/s in 2026, peaking at 38,000 m³/s at 08:00 that day.
In response to this round of heavy rainfall, CYPC strictly implemented evidence-based dispatch in accordance with the dispatching instructions from the Changjiang Water Resources Commission (CWRC). The Company closely monitored changes in hydrological and meteorological conditions and, in collaboration with the Yangtze River Basin Meteorological Center, the Bureau of Hydrology of CWRC, and other relevant agencies, stepped up joint forecast consultations by holding three additional sessions within the week, successfully forecasting this flood event one week in advance. Based on daily rolling forecasts of rainfall and inflow, flood information and dispatch plans were reported on a rolling daily basis. Furthermore, the cascade reservoir system in the Yangtze River basin was jointly coordinated to fully leverage the flood control function of these strategic national assets. Since July 28, the mean daily outflow from the Three Gorges Reservoir has been gradually increased from approximately 14,000 m³/s to 19,000 m³/s, pre-emptively releasing water to reserve 1.386 billion m³ of flood control capacity. This secures water reserves for stable power supply in the upcoming power consumption peak period and downstream water supplementation needs, while safeguarding flood control safety.
Currently, the Yangtze River basin is in the critical flood prevention period (late July to early August). Under the guidance and support of the CWRC and power grid operators, CYPC will uphold flood control safety as the top priority, conduct rolling joint forecast consultations on upstream hydro-meteorological conditions, continue to enhance forecasting and early warning capabilities, formulate optimized dispatch plans, and fulfill its role as the core pillar in flood control and flood season management, making every effort to ensure flood control safety and ecological stability of the Yangtze River and safeguard people's lives and property.
