On July 1, with the successful completion of the trial operation and maintenance of the final unit, CYPC officially assumed full-capacity operation of the Zhejiang Tiantai Pumped Storage Power Station—the pumped storage power station with the world's highest rated head and domestic largest single-unit capacity—welcoming the 105th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China with tangible achievements.
The Zhejiang Tiantai Pumped Storage Power Station has a total installed capacity of 1,700 MW, a rated head of 724 meters, and is equipped with four 425 MW reversible hydro-generating units, with an expected annual power generation of approximately 1.7 billion kWh. Construction of the main works began in May 2022, with the first unit achieving grid-connected power generation in December 2025, and all units commissioned by June 2026. It became the first pumped storage power station in China to achieve full commissioning during the 15th Five-Year Plan period (2026–2030), providing replicable practical experience for the efficient construction and operation of subsequent pumped storage projects.
To address the challenges posed by high water head and large capacity, CYPC proactively fulfilled its primary O&M responsibilities under the principle of "combining construction with management for seamless handover". CYPC was deeply engaged throughout the entire lifecycle—from design and equipment acceptance to construction coordination and units' commissioning—collaborating with all project stakeholders to overcome multiple technical hurdles. Leveraging mature O&M expertise from large-scale hydropower projects and systematically applying lessons learned from pumped storage commissioning, CYPC completed the high-quality takeover of all four units within just six months. This achievement has provided robust support for renewable energy integration and grid stability in East China.
Over the years, CYPC has focused on the full lifecycle management of pumped storage, systematically forging core capabilities in pumped storage business management and control. CYPC currently operates and manages the Changlongshan and Tiantai pumped storage power stations in Zhejiang, while preparing for electric power production at the Songyang pumped storage power station in parallel. Furthermore, the Company is deeply engaged in the construction of the pumped storage power project in Zhangye, Gansu and advancing preliminary work for the similar project in Xiuning, Anhui. These coordinated efforts are driving CTG's rolling development strategy for pumped storage—a dynamic pipeline that ensures a continuous cycle of projects in reserve, under approval, under construction, and in operation.
Going forward, leveraging its experience in managing and operating the world's largest clean energy corridor, CYPC will ensure the safe and efficient operation of the commissioned pumped storage power stations, collaborate with all stakeholders to advance the construction of projects under development, and promote the high-quality development of CTG's pumped storage business, thereby contributing CTG's strength to the construction of a new-type power system and the achievement of the carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals.
