175 Meters! Three Gorges Reservoir Successfully Completes Water Impoundment
Release time:2025-10-28

At 8:00 on October 24, the water level in front of the Three Gorges Dam reached 175 meters, successfully completing the 2025 impoundment target. This is also the 14th time the reservoir has been filled to its normal storage level since 2010.

As approved by the Ministry of Water Resources, the Three Gorges Reservoir officially commenced impoundment on September 10 with an initial water level of 164.2 meters. The 45-day impoundment process accumulated nearly 10 billion cubic meters of water.

During impoundment, tasks including flood control, supply guarantee, and water storage were intertwined, making operation complex. Under the guidance and support of superior dispatch organizations such as Changjiang Water Resources Commission of the Ministry of Water Resources, State Grid Corporation of China, and China Southern Power Grid, China Yangtze Power Co., Ltd. (CYPC) scientifically conducted forecasting and prediction, precisely implemented optimal operation, leveraged concerted efforts from multiple parties, and coordinated all tasks in a holistic manner. Amidst heavy autumn rainfall in West China, the Three Gorges Reservoir successfully managed four flood processes with peak flows of 30,000 cubic meters per second or higher, achieving resource utilization of floodwater at the end of the flood season while reinforcing flood safety barriers. Since September 10, the Three Gorges Hydropower Plant has cumulatively generated power of 21.2 TWh, exceeding the output of the last year for the same period by 13.6 TWh and ranking as the second-highest in history for the same period, demonstrating reliable and robust power supply assurance.

Monitoring data indicates that during the impoundment, the hydroproject and its ancillary equipment and facilities operated soundly, with normal conditions observed in sedimentation, water quality, and seismic geology in the reservoir area. Currently, the Three Gorges Reservoir holds 22.15 billion cubic meters of available water, a year-on-year increase of 7.46 billion cubic meters, and possesses 5.435 TWh of stored energy capacity, up 2 TWh from the previous year. This establishes a solid foundation for water supply during the dry season in the coming winter-spring period and for energy security during the winter peak demand period.

Going forward, CYPC will meticulously manage the world's largest clean energy corridor with a strong sense of political responsibility. It will precisely implement joint optimal operation of cascade reservoirs to fully leverage the comprehensive benefits of the strategic national project, providing a robust guarantee for water supply and energy security during the dry season in the coming winter-spring period.
