Mega Clean Energy Corridor Guarantees Energy Supply: Over 100 Units of Cascade Hydropower Plants Operate during Peak Demand to Ensure Energy Supply
Release time:2025-07-03

Recently, many places of China have experienced high temperatures, leading to continuously rising grid load demand. On June 30, the world's largest clean energy corridor had over 100 units in peak operation, setting a new high for the number of units in operation this year. While ensuring flood control safety, this green corridor generated over 1 TWh of daily electricity output for 21 consecutive days, fully serving as a "cornerstone" or "backbone" for securing the nation's energy supply.

Comprising six large hydropower plantsWudongde, Baihetan, Xiluodu, Xiangjiaba, Three Gorges, and Gezhoubaalong the mainstream of the Yangtze River, the world's largest clean energy corridor boasts a total installed capacity of 71.695 GW and an average annual output of approximately 300 TWh. It primarily supplies power to Central China, East China, and provinces including Sichuan, Chongqing, Yunnan, and Guangdong. Since the onset of summer, under the guidance and support of the Changjiang Water Resources Commission (CWRC) of the Ministry of Water Resources, State Grid, and China Southern Power Grid, CYPC under China Three Gorges Corporation (CTG) has continuously implemented lean operation management of the cascade hydropower plants, including strengthening hydrological and rainfall forecasts, timely issuing meteorological warnings, dynamically optimizing plant operations based on load demand from power distribution areas, and scientifically coordinating joint optimal operation of the cascade hydropower plants, so as to fully leverage the peak-shaving capacity of these major national projects.

Since the beginning of June, the cascade hydropower plants have created a daily electricity output of 1.197 TWh, with peak output of more than 59 GW and peak regulation capacity up to 22.1 GW. Wudongde, Xiluodu, Xiangjiaba and Gezhouba hydropower plants successively operated at full capacity, including Xiangjiaba's first full-load operation of the year on June 11. From June 10 to June 30, the cascade hydropower plants generated over 1 TWh of daily electricity output for 21 consecutive days, setting a new historical record for the same period. This sustained flow of clean energy to the power grid has underpinned the safe and steady operation of the grid and the West-East Power Transmission Project.

Going forward, CYPC will continue to properly operate and manage the world's largest clean energy corridor under the centralized deployment of CTG. It will strictly implement dispatch orders from CWRC, enhance coordination with State Grid and China Southern Power Grid, and fully leverage the comprehensive benefits of these major national projects, thereby making greater contributions to safeguarding the Yangtze River and ensuring national energy security.
