Accumulative Power Generation of Xiluodu HPP Exceeds 600 TWh
Release time:2024-02-14

As of February 14, 2024, the accumulative power generation of Xiluodu HPP, the fourth largest hydropower plant in the world, exceeds 600 TWh. This is equivalent to saving over 180 million tons of standard coal and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by more than 494 million tons, greatly promoting the all-round green transformation of social and economic development in China.

Located in Jinsha River at the border between Leibo County of Sichuan Province and Yongshan County of Yunnan Province, Xiluodu HPP serves as important power supply hub for the national West-East Power Transmission Project, and boasts as world's first high-arch dam power station with total installed capacity exceeding 10,000 MW. It places a primary focus on power generation, while taking into account flood control, sediment retention and improvement of navigation conditions in the reservoir area and the river reaches downstream. 18 hydro-generating units are installed in Xiluodu HPP, with single unit capacity of 770 MW, total installed capacity of 13,860 MW, and annual average power generation of 57.12~64.06 billion KWh. The project construction of Xiluodu HPP was started in December 2005. In July 2013, the first batch of units was put into operation. By the end of June 2014, all its units had been put into operation.

As pointed out by Liu Zhihui, Vice Plant Manager of Xiluodu HPP of CTG, "Currently, considering the frequent low-temperature and rainy and snowy days, and the key period of power supply for the Spring Festival, Xiluodu HPP actively coordinates with the power grid companies to adjust the operating mode of units, increases the patrol inspection and diagnostic analysis of power equipment, and strictly implements the 24h on-duty system to ensure the safe and reliable power supply. Since the beginning of 2024, 16 units have been put into operation during the peak period, with a maximum daily output reaching 10,423 MW, thus sufficiently guaranteeing the power supply."

Xiluodu HPP, together with other cascade hydropower plants such as Wudongde HPP, Baihetan HPP, Xiangjiaba HPP, Three Gorges HPP, and Gezhouba HPP, constitutes the world's largest clean energy corridor. With 110 hydro-generating units, this clean energy corridor realizes the total installed capacity of 71,695 MW, which is equivalent to the installed capacity of "3 Three Gorges HPPs", providing strong momentum for green development of our economy and society.
