Recently, as part of dedicated efforts to fulfil the Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principle and demonstrate CYPC's practices and achievements in terms of ESG, CYPC successfully held the first ESG research event in the domestic power industry. This event featured a combination of on-site investigations and special lectures. The event received extensive attention from investors. Nearly 30 institutional investors, including China International Capital Corporation Limited (CICC), Fullgoal Fund, Orient Fund, Invesco Great Wall, Minsheng Securities, Haitong Securities, and China Merchants Securities, actively participated in the event.
The investors visited the Three Gorges and Gezhouba regions, where they had in-depth surveys at the frontlines of clean electricity production at hydropower stations, and visited the Chinese Sturgeon Research Institute, Three Gorges Rare Plant Garden, Three Gorges Project Museum, etc. Later, they visited the villages assisted by CYPC in the reservoir area, such as Xujiachong Village in Yiling District and Niuzhaping Village in Dianjun District. The investors conducted on-site investigations in key ESG areas such as renewable energy production and operation, biodiversity conservation, contributions to carbon emissions, fulfillment of social responsibilities, and maintenance of community relations. Additionally, they also held specialized seminars on topics related to the forecast of water and rainfall regimes and comprehensive water resource utilization in the Yangtze River Basin.
"As a flagship species in the protected rare and endemic fish species in the Yangtze River, the Chinese sturgeon has a significant scientific and ecological value. The annual efforts in breeding and releasing have contributed positively to the conservation of aquatic biodiversity in the Yangtze River," said a researcher from the Chinese Sturgeon Research Institute. With the relentless efforts of five generations in technical research lasting for four decades, they have overcome a series of core technical challenges related to the nutrition and growth regulation, genetic management, and genomics of the Chinese sturgeon. This has laid a foundation for the sustainable continuation of the Chinese sturgeon species, equipping the natural population of the Chinese sturgeon with the ability to recover and reproduce.
"We are thankful for the assistance from CYPC. Our village has undergone rapid and remarkable changes. Now, the roads are wider, the environment is more beautiful, and our income has increased..." This is the heartfelt sentiment of the people living in Xujiachong Village. In recent years, CYPC has been dedicated to full-hearted support for the all-round rural revitalization. Specifically, it implemented assistance projects around the cascade hydropower plants in the basin, worked hard to build beautiful and harmonious villages that are desirable to live and work in, and aided dozens of villages to develop step by step into prosperous communities highlighting ecological conservation, like Xujiachong Village.
In the central control room of the Three Gorges Hydropower Plant, the investors all expressed their profound admiration and respect when they learned that the Three Gorges Hydropower Plant has been operating safely and steadily for over 20 years and generated over 1,600 TWh of clean electricity. The operation personnel of Three Gorges Hydropower Plant explained that the 1,600 TWh of electricity is renewable clean energy, which is equivalent to over 480 million tons of standard coal and a reduction of approximately 1.32 billion tons of carbon dioxide emissions. This has a significant emission reduction benefit, comparable to the role of one-third of the Great Khingan Mountains forest area in China. The investors unanimously expressed that it is not easy for a hydropower plant with flood control as its primary mission to make such remarkable achievements. Without the support from a series of innovative technologies, such achievements would be impossible. These innovative technologies have also set up a mature and efficient Chinese model for the world's hydropower industry.
This ESG research enables the investors to have a more comprehensive understanding of the clean energy sector and gain a better appreciation of CYPC's strong sense of responsibility and significant contributions in terms of socially responsible investing (SRI) and rural revitalization, and further showcases and solidifies the company's image as a top-tier performer and a prominent blue-chip enterprise. By fully practicing the ESG concepts, CYPC will continue to steadfastly pursue green development, deepen reform, enhance the driving force of innovation, and fulfill social responsibilities, thus injecting new impetus into the sustainable development of the economy, society, and environment.
