At 6:00 p.m. on November 5, No. 10 unit on the right bank of Baihetan HPP successfully passed the 72-hour test run and was officially put into operation. This is the fifteenth 1,000 MW hydro-generating unit put into operation by Baihetan HPP, marking the countdown for full operation of all 16 units installed at Baihetan HPP.
During the grid connection and commissioning period of No. 10 unit, Baihetan HPP reached the normal storage level of 825 meters for the first time, which means that the commissioning of No. 10 unit had to face the challenges of high water head and full load. At the same time, the commissioning coincided with the hydraulic prototype test of the flood discharge facilities of the HPP and the parallel commissioning of another unit, which led to unprecedented difficulties in technology and risk management. The Baihetan HPP earnestly implemented the guidelines of President XI Jinping's Congratulatory Letter to Jinsha River Baihetan HPP on the Operation and Power Generation of the First Batch of Units, pursuing perfection and taking responsibility and accountability. The Plant set up a special commissioning team, and all professionals worked together to achieve 24-hour real-time tracking of the units' operating status, ensure that all tests were carried out in a safe and efficient manner, make every effort to ensure that the operating parameters of the units meet relevant requirements, and ultimately achieved the goal of high-quality unit with "one-time installation, one-time startup and one-time commissioning".
Meanwhile, in order to ensure the smooth progress of various tasks including electricity supply, work safety, annual maintenance and overhaul and grid connection, Baihetan HPP made an overall plan, clearly defined safety responsibilities, strengthened prevention and control of safety risks, conducted lean operation and meticulous maintenance, and cooperated with all participating contractors to ensure that the unit can be successfully put into operation while maintaining a good state of safety production at the Plant. Now, the fifteen 1,000 MW units at Baihetan HPP are running stably with good indicators, and the cumulative generation of clean energy has exceeded 49 TWh.
Baihetan HPP is located on the mainstream section of the lower reaches of the Jinsha River at the junction of Ningnan County, Sichuan Province and Qiaojia County, Yunnan Province. It is a major project in China's West-East Power Transmission Program, and the largest hydropower project under construction in the world with the highest technical difficulties. It has a total of sixteen 1,000 MW hydro-generating units independently developed by China with the largest single unit capacity in the world. Upon full completion, Baihetan HPP will become the second largest hydropower plant in the world, only next to the Three Gorges HPP. It will provide green power to the national economic development, contributing to the realization of national carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals.
