CTG Cascade Hydropower Plants on Main Stream of Yangtze River, the World's Largest Clean Energy Corridor, Makes a Good Start in the First Quarter
Release time:2022-04-21

According to the analysis meeting on production and operation in the first quarter of 2022 held by CYPC under CTG on April 14, the accumulative power generation of the six cascade hydropower plants along the main stream of the Yangtze River (i.e., Wudongde, Baihetan, Xiluodu, Xiangjiaba, Three Gorges and Gezhouba HPPs) had reached 46.96 TWh as of March 31, 2022, up about 27% year on year. The 46.96 TWh of clean electric power, which was equivalent to saving over 14 million tons of standard coal and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by over 39 million tons, may support more than 640 billion yuan of Chinese GDP, assuming that 13.8 yuan of GDP could be created per kilowatt-hour. The six HPPs of CTG on the main stream of the Yangtze River made a good start in the first quarter and contributed to green development.

The six cascade hydropower plants of CTG, i.e., Wudongde, Baihetan, Xiluodu, Xiangjiaba, Three Gorges and Gezhouba HPPs, were like six pearls inlaid on the main stream of the Yangtze River. These six HPPs had a record-setting annual output of 262.883 TWh throughout 2021. This output was equivalent to reducing carbon dioxide emissions by about 220 million tons, which meant that the Yangtze River Basin had become the world's largest clean energy corridor.

Among the six cascade hydropower plants of CTG on the main stream of the Yangtze River, 101 generating units have been put into operation with a total installed capacity of more than 62 GW, accounting for about 16% of China's installed hydropower capacity (391 GW by the end of 2021). With large energy generation capacities and great abilities in peak load regulation, these HPPs helped relieve the power shortage in Central and Eastern China as well as Sichuan, Yunnan, Guangdong and other provinces. In addition to playing a key role in the safe and stable operation of power grids, these HPPs contributed to accomplish the national goals of carbon dioxide emissions peaking and carbon neutrality as a strong support to China's national strategy of West-East Electricity Transmission Project.

In the first quarter of 2022, CYPC under CTG made overall plans for production and operation, and ensured that all cascade hydropower plants on the main stream of the Yangtze River generated as much electricity as possible with sufficient power supply. Not only did it effectively alleviate the tension of power supply in the areas receiving electricity, but it took into account the needs in water replenishment, shipping and ecology across the basin. Fulfilling its missions as a central state-owned enterprise, it completed major tasks of guaranteeing power supply during the Spring Festival, the Beijing Winter Olympics, the Winter Paralympics and the Two Sessions.
